MD At IIT Kharagpur: India’s biggest engineering institute is all set to introduce its first Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, having received the go-ahead from the National Medical Commission (NMC).
This is a big step towards fulfilling the institute’s dream of blending technology with medical education, officials stated.
According to IIT Kharagpur Director Suman Chakraborty, the institute’s proven track record in healthcare technology and access to veteran doctors place it ideally to offer a postgraduate medical course.
“Considering the availability of doctors, specialists, and healthcare researchers at IIT Kharagpur, starting an MD program is a natural step. It would help forge technology-integrated medical education and research,” said Chakraborty during a media interaction.

MD At IIT Kharagpur: Training & Infrastructure
Students of the MD course will receive clinical training at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SPMSH) adjacent to the IIT Kharagpur campus. While SPMSH functions as an integral component of the institution, its affiliated hospital is a separate legal entity.
The hospital recently expanded its operation from the outpatient department to inpatient and surgery facilities, and this is a key step in establishing a whole medical education ecosystem.
SPMSH also conducted its first surgical procedure in its new operation theatre by senior surgeon Dr. R. K. Behera. Following the successful operation, there is a plan to develop a 220-bed inpatient department as part of a mission-mode expansion in order to enhance surgical and specialty care facilities.

Hoping for Last NMC Clearance
The proposal for the MD program has already received clearance from the Board of Governors of IIT Kharagpur, and every required document work has been completed.
Now the institute is waiting for the registration portal to open to formally apply to the NMC. Subject to approval, the first batch will accommodate 10 to 20 students, according to institute officials.
MBBS Program Delayed at IIT Kharagpur
Though IIT Kharagpur initially planned to start an MBBS course, plans are on hold since the infrastructure is lacking.
Former President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam had in 2007 laid the foundation stone of Dr. B. C. Roy Multi Specialty Medical Research Centre with a view to establishing both an MBBS course and a super-specialty hospital.
Though the undergraduate medical course has been delayed, the upcoming MD programme is a major move in IIT Kharagpur’s effort to close the gap between engineering, medicine, and advanced healthcare research.
