In a major boost to medical education in Odisha, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 62 new postgraduate (PG) medical seats across six government medical colleges in the state.
Colleges and Seat Distribution
- Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (VIMSAR), Burla: 15 seats approved
 - SCB Medical College, Cuttack: 3 seats
 - Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Bhubaneswar: 6 seats
 - Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar: 6 seats
 - PRM Medical College & Hospital, Baripada: 20 seats
 - FM Medical College, Balasore: 8 seats
 - Bhima Bhoi Medical College, Balangir: 10 seats

Why This Move Matters
- Expansion of Medical Education
The addition of new PG seats will strengthen Odisha’s medical education infrastructure, especially in western regions of the state where healthcare resources are limited. - Improvement in Specialist Healthcare Services
With more postgraduate students being trained, the state will have a larger pool of specialist doctors, improving the availability of advanced healthcare services. - Opportunities for Local Students
The approval will benefit local students by allowing them to pursue postgraduate medical education within the state instead of migrating to other regions. - Enhanced State–Centre Collaboration
The move reflects strong cooperation between the state government and the central authorities, aiming to uplift healthcare education and services in Odisha.
