Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court has refused to approve the admission of four postgraduate medical students who were enrolled illegally at Kanachur Institute of Medical Sciences, Mangaluru and KVG Medical College and Hospital, Sullia. The court directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to initiate strict action against both institutions.
The case was heard after the affected students approached the court. Among the four petitioners, three had secured seats in Pathology, Radiology, and Orthopaedics at At Kanachur Institute, students from Thrissur (Kerala), Kolhapur (Maharashtra), and Thiruvallur (Kerala) got seats. Another student from Bengaluru joined KVG Medical College for Orthopaedics.
The students challenged KEA’s notice of March 11, 2024, which cancelled their admissions for not following the Postgraduate Medical Education Rules 2023.
Kanachur Institute informed the court that it had surrendered two seats in Radiology and Orthopaedics to the KEA. As the petitioners were not included in the counselling process, the institute admitted them directly and claimed that the Pathology seat was filled against a vacancy. KVG Medical College stated that the Orthopaedics seat was allotted to a student following a last-minute cancellation by another candidate.
However, the Department of Medical Education (DME) countered this claim, highlighting that Kanachur Institute had indeed submitted a surrender letter for two seats (MS Orthopaedics and MD Pathology) on October 30, 2023, but later withdrew it after stamping. The court said the institute misled it by giving a false affidavit.
The court clarified that NEET PG 2025 medical admissions are valid only if done through official counselling. It therefore directed the NMC to take action against both colleges for breaking the rules.
