NEET PG 2025-2026: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 171 additional postgraduate (PG) medical seats for the 2025-26 academic year, instructing counselling authorities not to wait for formal Letters of Permission before including these seats in the admission process.
According to official sources, the seats have been sanctioned across multiple medical colleges in different states after they challenged earlier decisions related to seat approvals. The NMC has clarified that the approval has been granted following due assessment under the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) provisions of the NMC Act, 2019.

Counselling to Proceed Without Delay
The Commission has specifically directed state counselling authorities and central counselling bodies to proceed with seat inclusion without insisting on formal LoPs from individual institutions. As it may adversely affect aspirants and disrupt the admission timeline.
Seats Approved After Appeals
The additional PG seats were approved after medical colleges filed appeals challenging earlier decisions that had either withheld or reduced their sanctioned intake. These appeals were examined by the First Appeal Committee, following which the approvals were granted.
The seats span a range of clinical and para-clinical disciplines, including general medicine, general surgery, anaesthesiology, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, orthopaedics, radiology, dermatology, psychiatry, emergency medicine, microbiology, pathology and other specialties.
Benefit for PG Aspirants
The decision is expected to provide significant relief to thousands of NEET PG aspirants, particularly at a time when competition for limited postgraduate medical seats remains high. Education experts believe that early inclusion of these seats will improve transparency and prevent last-minute confusion during counselling rounds.
The NMC has confirmed that these seats will be treated as valid for the 2025-26 academic session, ensuring that admissions made through counselling will not face legal or administrative hurdles later.
