Medical specialisations after MBBS can be very expensive, especially in the case of postgraduate studies like MD and MS. To bear this expense, the Indian government, as well as private entities, offer various kinds of scholarships, educational loans, and grants for PG medical students.
All these programs allow NEET PG candidates to pursue their specialisation with no fear of high tuition fees and living expenses. This article discusses the best NEET PG scholarships, education loan plans, and grants that will be useful for medical students in 2026.
Why Scholarships are Important for NEET PG Students
Postgraduate medical courses in India may range from ₹10 lakh to ₹40 lakh based on the college. While top-tier government colleges are not expensive, private and deemed colleges are.

Scholarships and subsidized loans motivate deserving students to pursue their studies, not based on money. Start with scholarships at the national level and then proceed to other avenues. These can be availed through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) and come in the form of reimbursement of tuition fees, stipends, or interest subsidy.
National Government Scholarships for NEET PG Candidates
| Scholarship Name | Eligibility | Benefits | Where to Apply |
|---|---|---|---|
| National Fellowship for OBC Students | OBC students pursuing PG or PhD in professional fields | ₹25,000/month (JRF) + contingency grant | NSP Portal |
| Ishan Uday Scholarship | Students from Northeast region | ₹7,800/month | NSP Portal |
| National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMSS) | Meritorious students from low-income families | ₹12,000 per annum | NSP Portal |
| Top Class Education Scheme (for SC/ST) | SC/ST students with income < ₹8 lakh/year | Full tuition + living allowance | NSP Portal |
| Central Sector Interest Subsidy Scheme (CSIS) | Students with income < ₹4.5 lakh taking education loans | Full interest waiver during study period | Vidya Lakshmi Portal |
PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme: Collateral-Free Loans for NEET PG Students
A major addition since this article was first published: the PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme, approved by the Union Cabinet in November 2024, is now the primary government route for education loans, including for NEET PG candidates admitted to eligible institutions.
- Collateral-free and guarantor-free loans, regardless of amount, for admissions to 860+ identified Quality Higher Education Institutions (QHEIs), which include AIIMS, JIPMER, and other top medical institutes.
- Interest subvention during the moratorium period (course duration + 1 year): full subvention for family income up to ₹4.5 lakh/year, and 3% subvention on loans up to ₹10 lakh for family income up to ₹8 lakh/year.
- 75% government credit guarantee on loans up to ₹7.5 lakh, making banks more willing to lend without security.
- Apply once through the Common Education Loan Application Form (CELAF) on the PM-Vidyalaxmi Portal, and the same application can go to up to three banks simultaneously.
- Banks price loans under the scheme differently (SBI’s PMVL-Utkarsh/Uttam/Uday slabs, for instance, currently range from about 6.90% to 8.40%), so it’s worth comparing offers across lenders on the portal before accepting one.
State-Level Medical PG Scholarships
All the states also provide postgraduate medical aspirant schemes for scholarships. These can be domicile-based, merit-based, or category-based. All these apply mostly through the websites of the education department of the state or even the NSP portal.
| State | Scholarship Scheme | Eligibility & Benefits |
|---|---|---|
| Karnataka | Vidyasiri / DBCM Scholarship | Full/partial fee waiver for SC/ST/OBC/PwD |
| Maharashtra | Rajarshi Shahu Scholarship | Up to ₹2 lakh for economically weaker students |
| West Bengal | Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means | ₹12,000-₹60,000/year based on merit |
| Tamil Nadu | BC/MBC/DNC & Minority Scholarships | Fee reimbursement for government quota students |
| Madhya Pradesh | Medhavi Vidyarthi Yojana | Full tuition for top NEET PG scorers |

Education Loans for NEET PG Candidates
If the full fee is not covered by scholarships, education loans can also be availed by students. All nationalized and private sector banks have customized loan plans for NEET PG aspirants, occasionally with a moratorium period up to the completion of the course. Most public-sector banks now price these loans under the PM-Vidyalaxmi umbrella, and rates move with the RBI repo rate, so always confirm the current rate on the bank’s own page before applying.
