NEET PG 2025 Counselling Delay Leaves Thousands of Doctors in Limbo

The NEET PG 2025 counselling has been postponed due to seat matrix revisions by NMC and NBE. Thousands of medical graduates face delayed admissions and career uncertainty.

New Delhi: The postponement of the NEET PG 2025 counselling has placed thousands of young doctors across India in a state of uncertainty. The delay has halted both enrolment into postgraduate medical seats and employment opportunities in hospitals, creating a dual crisis in medical education and healthcare staffing.

Delay Details

The NEET PG 2025 exam was held on 3 August 2025, with results declared on 19 August. Although the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) initiated registration last month and released the counselling bulletin and scheme, the seat-allotment process scheduled from 6 November with results due on 8 November was unexpectedly put on hold.

The reason behind the delay lies in the revision of the seat matrix after several changes were notified by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the National Board of Examinations (NBE), including the withdrawal of 169 DNB seats after counselling rounds had begun.

Impact on Doctors & Hospitals

According to the Federation of Resident Doctors Association (FORDA), the delay is causing significant distress among medical graduates:

  • Thousands of MBBS-qualified doctors who have completed internships are unable to enrol in PG courses or begin work in hospitals.
  • Government hospitals are already facing staff shortages and heavy workloads. The absence of new PG residents is worsening the staffing crisis.
  • Emotional and financial burdens are rising among young doctors. Many have postponed job opportunities while waiting for counselling to resume.
  • Academic schedules, training sessions, and research work have all been disrupted due to the delay in admissions.

Voices from the Frustrated

Dr Meet Ghoria, National General Secretary of FORDA, said that the continuous delay in NEET PG counselling has become a recurring crisis that causes immense distress to thousands of young doctors across the country.

Dr Lakshya Mittal, President of the United Doctors’ Front, noted that the authorities should have anticipated these issues and ensured timely counselling.

Dr Akshay Dongardive, National President of the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA), added that healthcare cannot afford delays and that uncertainty harms both students and the nation.

What Happens Next?

The MCC has extended the choice-filling deadline for Round-1 counselling “till further notice” to accommodate the revised seat matrix. Until the updated schedule is released and counselling resumes, the situation remains fluid and troubling for both aspiring specialists and hospitals relying on new postgraduate recruits.
