The central government has approved the third phase of strengthening medical colleges, independent postgraduate institutions and government hospitals on 24th September, 2025, approximately 700 seats to be increased across MBBS and MD-MS courses in Uttar Pradesh.
This includes approximately 500 MBBS and 200 MD-MS seats. The central government will also provide financial assistance of INR 1.5 crore per seat.
The state currently has 13,225 MBBS seats and 3,971 MD-MS seats across 92 government and private medical colleges. This means that a total of 17,196 seats in all medical colleges. This number will increase to 17,896 after the central government’s announcement. Thus, a total of 17,896 doctors will be produced annually in the U.P. from government and private medical colleges.
There are total 13,225 MBBS seats in the state’s medical colleges, for which the admission process is currently underway, while there are 3,971 MD and MS seats in U.P.’s PG medical colleges. After this announcement, the number of seats to be increased across MBBS and MD-MS courses are approximately 13,725 and 4,171 respectively.
For the seats to be increased across MBBS and MD-MS programs in medical colleges, the number of beds and faculty members must be as per the standards set by the National Medical Commission (NMC)‘s standards for medical education.
