The Bihar government, led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, held a cabinet meeting on Friday where 129 proposals were approved. One major decision from this meeting was the reduction of bond period for medical PG doctors in Bihar MD/MS system.
All the decisions will find extensive application among students, doctors, unemployed young people, and state government employees in the state.

A bond period for medical PG doctors is a compulsory service commitment to a state’s healthcare system after completing their postgraduate degree, typically in government hospitals or rural health centers.
The duration of this can range from 1 to 3 years depending upon the state of posting.

Bond Period for Medical PG Doctors-Service Term Reduced
One of the key decisions was made regarding this bond period for postgraduate (PG) and diploma doctors who are serving in government medical colleges in Bihar.
- The mandatory government service term has been reduced from 3 years to 2 years.
- Notably, if doctors do not perform compulsory service, the government will not recover the salary or honorarium earned during study periods.
- The action is meant to bring flexibility to medical graduates while still guaranteeing the delivery of services in state hospitals.

Bond Period in Bihar Prior to This Decision
In Bihar, the state government has a service bond for postgraduate (PG) medical doctors. Historically, this bond required a 3-year service period.

In case of non-compliance with the same, a penalty of ₹25 lakh would be charged. The recent report suggests the Bihar government has reduced the bond period to 2-years.
Salary Increase for ANM Staff
Another decision was made to enhance immunization campaigns and healthcare provision, the cabinet sanctioned a hike in the contract Auxiliary Nurse Midwives’ (ANMs) honorarium:
- Increased monthly honorarium from ₹11,500 to ₹15,000.
- The 5% yearly increment has been included as a provision.
This move is for the purpose of encouraging frontline healthcare workers, mostly in urban regions where maternal-child health and vaccination services require strengthening.
