How Karnataka PG Medical Fees Are Determined
Tuition fees for MD/MS seats in Karnataka are not fixed by individual colleges alone – they are regulated through a mix of authorities depending on the seat type:
- Government quota seats (50% state quota in government colleges) follow fee slabs approved by the state government and are the most affordable.
- Private and deemed university seats are fixed through agreements between the institution and the Karnataka government / Fee Regulatory Committee, and are typically split into Government quota, Management/Private quota, and NRI quota tiers.
- NRI quota fees are charged in USD or an equivalent high INR slab and are reserved for candidates with NRI sponsorship.
- Fees can be revised annually, so candidates should always cross-check the final figure on the official KEA counselling brochure or the respective college’s admission cell before locking a choice.

Karnataka PG Medical Bond & Service Obligation
Along with tuition fees, every candidate who takes a Karnataka PG medical seat (government or private, under the government/state quota) signs a compulsory service bond as part of KEA counselling. As per the current framework:
- MD/MS (Degree) candidates: required to serve 1 year in a rural/government posting, or pay a bond penalty along with recovery of the stipend drawn during the course.
- PG Diploma candidates: required to serve up to 3 years, or pay a separate (comparatively lower) bond penalty with stipend recovery.
- Bond terms and penalty amounts are revised periodically by the Karnataka government, so candidates should confirm the exact figure from the official KEA counselling brochure for 2026-27 before accepting a seat.
Eligibility for Non-Karnataka (Outside State) Candidates
Karnataka is more open than several other states when it comes to non-domicile candidates:
- Candidates from outside Karnataka cannot apply for the government/state quota seats, which are reserved for Karnataka domicile candidates.
- Non-Karnataka candidates can apply for private and deemed college seats under the Management/Private quota, NRI quota, and “Other” (Open) quota, which are open to candidates regardless of state domicile.
- All India Quota (AIQ) seats in Karnataka government colleges are also open to candidates from any state through MCC counselling.
Additional Costs Beyond Tuition Fees
Tuition fee is only one part of the total cost of a PG seat in Karnataka. Candidates should also budget for:
- Hostel fees and mess charges (compulsory at most government colleges, optional/paid separately at private colleges)
- Caution deposit / refundable deposit collected at admission
- University registration and examination fees
- Stipend deductions, if the bond is broken before completing the mandatory service period
These additional costs can add roughly ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh per year on top of the tuition fee shown in the tables above.
